Parishes thrive when they see themselves as mission-driven communities

In the busyness of parish life, it’s easy to fall into a rhythm of just going through the motions. The offertory is collected, ministries continue, and parishioners gather each weekend for Mass. But the bigger question is: what is the mission behind it all? Stewardship, at its core, is not about dollars and cents; it is about discipleship. It is about creating a place where people know they belong, feel part of something larger, and see their gifts fueling a mission that extends far beyond the parish walls.

As Chief Advancement Officer for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, one of the greatest joys of my work is seeing the life of our parishes up close. I have the privilege of visiting communities across the Archdiocese and hearing firsthand how faith is being lived out in so many inspiring ways. It might be a parish that runs a food pantry for struggling families, another that is walking with those who are grieving, or one where young people are discovering Christ through vibrant youth programs. These are signs of the Gospel alive in our parishes, and they remind me daily that stewardship is about much more than giving. It is about participating in God’s work in our neighborhoods.

Many parishioners faithfully attend Mass but are not always aware of the parish’s broader impact. That is why storytelling is so important. When we share the stories of people touched by ministry, we reveal the parish not only as a place of worship but also as a living witness of Christ’s love. Inviting parishioners to share testimonials at Mass, highlighting ministries in the bulletin or on social media, or creating short, engaging videos that capture the good works happening each week all help make the mission visible. When people see and hear what their parish is accomplishing, they begin to see themselves as part of something bigger.

Parishes thrive when they see themselves as mission-driven communities. Just as people invest in businesses or causes they believe in, parishioners invest their time, talent, and treasure when they see their parish living out a clear and inspiring mission. That is why some parishes adopt simple yet powerful taglines like “Belong. Believe. Bear Witness.” These phrases do more than decorate a banner; they remind parishioners of who they are, what they stand for, and the mission they are being invited to join. The goal is not just to ask for money. It is to show how the parish forms disciples, strengthens community, and brings the Gospel to life. Once people connect to that vision, generosity follows naturally.

Stewardship is not a seasonal push or a one-time campaign; it is a culture. It is the ongoing rhythm of gratitude, participation, and mission. Pastors and parish leaders set the tone by consistently communicating, celebrating, and inviting. That might mean highlighting milestones during the year, publicly thanking parishioners, or hosting moments of celebration that remind everyone: we are building something together. When parishioners feel proud of what their parish is accomplishing, they engage more deeply and give more joyfully.

Parishes thrive when they move beyond the motions. Every announcement, story, and thank-you is a chance to remind parishioners that they are part of something greater, a Catholic community with the power to transform lives. By making the invisible visible, articulating a clear mission, and celebrating the work of the Church, parishes not only strengthen their identity but also inspire parishioners to see their faith community as a place worth investing in. And when that happens, stewardship becomes more than a collection; it becomes a way of life.
